A lot of it is to do with the parents also...some of them find it easier to plunk the child in front of the TV, or PSP, so they can go about their work.

Doing activities with kids.. reading to them, drawing, board games, chess takes time, effort and a lot of energy.

Most of the parents have outside jobs, and they are exhausted at the end of the day. Moreover here in the ME they dont have the back up support that they might get from their extended family.

But I believe if you try you can, kick the dependence on technology. Motto Use only when required.
