There have always been problems between men and women, this is not something that has arisen out of modernity. What has changed is that it is easier to do something about these problems.
'level of obedience demanded' I find it offensive that you would use such a word as obedience. Women aren't like animals that are to be tamed.
Also, there is no 'duty' neither on behalf of women OR men in a marriage. Marriage should be entered into out of ones own choosing, not forcibly by particular societal demands. What we do in a loving relationship should be out of love and not because we are obliged to do it.
