The official appealed to the public to co-operate with the CID by calling the hotline 4714220 or 4714222 to report beggars to the anti-begging section of the department.
“There is no doubt that public co-operation in combating begging is very essential. Security efforts alone will not do. Begging is something strange to our community and distort the image of the country,” he said.
He also urged the people not to give any money to beggars, saying that this would only encourage them to continue their “illegal practices”.
“We have local charities which receive donations and help the poor and the needy, whether inside the country or outside. Those who want to help should give their alms to these charities instead of the fraudulent beggars who do not deserve it,” he added.
Lieutenant Rashid al-Hajiri, the head of research team at the CID, said the public could also report begging cases to 999 at the Interior Ministry.
