A lot of them do not voluntarily choose to leave home and loved ONES to come & and do underpaid menial jobs here. Poverty sometimes forces a person to make choices that he never would in ordinary circumstances. And when you are faced with a choice of either deal with it or go home to nothing, they make the painful decision of living with the bare minimum.
One of the maintenence workers in my compound has a son studying in an Engineering college. I was shocked to discover this. Here is a father who is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice only so that his family, especially his son can have a better life. And my respect for him has only increased.
As for working conditions back in their hometowns, these so called "labourers" can never be treated the way they are here with regards to pay, working hours and days off. The powerful labour unions would kick up a storm.
