What the hypno-therapist is doing is merely taking the subject to a hyper-suggestive state, and "guiding" their induced thoughts. To put it in plain English, it is nothing but a guided dream sequence. The subject's brain is functioning exactly as if it were dreaming (which we all do several times in our sleep sequence everyday - read about the REM phase of every sleep cycle). The only difference is that in normal sleep, there is very little outside suggestions that reach the brain (although some does - e.g., sometimes you dream of a dog licking your ear if a dog is actually licking your ear while you are asleep). A hypno-therapist is trained to keep that channel open while putting you to an otherwise normal (albeit induced) sleep. Notice how the hypno-therapist acts tough on the subject at all times, keeping the suggestions flowing constantly - otherwise the subject's thoughts become detached from reality exactly like in our dreams (and this would be particularly embarrassing in front of a national TV audience :). Notice how your everyday dreams always begin in realistic sequences before becoming increasingly fanciful. The hypno-therapist is trained to interject the subject's thoughts just before this happens, and quickly suggest another realistic alternative for him/her to continue dreaming.
The "unknown facts" that the subjects reveal are usually facts already known to him/her (perhaps even unknowingly - he/she might have read or heard it years back, and his/her conscious mind might have "forgotten" it, but it might still be present somewhere in the brain), or they're plainly unverifiable. E.g., in yesterday's episode the subject mentioned about a Durga Temple in Mangalore. Now, I happen to know this town quite well, and believe me, there is NO Durga Temple in the whole town! This is just a slip on the part of the TV show editors. I'm sure there are lots of such other things that they edit out conveniently!
Think scientific. Live scientific. There is no Rebirth / God / Devil / any such bullshit!
