school counselors are equipped with psychological assessments, and if such tests show psychiatric problems, then that's the only time a child should see a psychiatrist. otherwise, a school counselor should be competent enough to handle maladjustments or behavioral problems.

remember please, that not all behavioral problems require psychiatric help. don't rush to get a psychiatrist. they will prescribe your child some medications and hope that the problem will go away.

most of the times, what a disturbed child needs is professional counseling, which is what school counselors or child psychologists do.
