Excerpts from Susairaj’s 14-page confessional statement which was made available to the defence lawyers last week:

“I got a phone call from Emile Jerome (from Cochin), whom I intend to marry, around 11.30 pm. I told him that Neeraj was at my house. The battery of my cell phone got discharged while I was talking to him. Emile then called me on Neeraj’s cell phone. I told him that Neeraj was acting very ‘funny’ on that day. He (Emile) asked me if he should come down and I told him that Neeraj would leave after dinner.”

“Though Neeraj’s friends asked him to join them for a party at one of his friends’ house, he refused to go. I also refused to join him for the party. Since Neeraj had work in Malad in the morning, he requested me to let him stay at my house. I allowed him to stay back.”

(Emile reached the house at around 7.30 am) “He started giving blows to Neeraj. Both started fighting and I could not control them. I fell down after they pushed me aside. When I got up, I saw that Emile stabbed Neeraj with a kitchen knife. I sustained injury on my right palm...I saw Neeraj falling and Emile kicking him. I was screaming... Emile shut my mouth and also threatened to kill me. He then raped me. All this while Emile was holding the knife.”

“By that time, Neeraj was dead. I told Emile to take Neeraj to a hospital. Emile asked me to go to the bathroom and take a bath. Then he came inside and raped me again.”

“Then Emile dragged Neeraj’s body inside the bathroom and asked me to go to Hypercity Mall at Malad and buy bags and curtains...he also instructed me to bring a knife and a room freshener...while I was buying these things, Emile was talking to me on my cell phone. Around 3 pm, Emile chopped the entire dead body into pieces.”

“We took one of my friend’s (Kiran) car and stopped at a petrol pump in Lokhandwala area to fill the tank...Emile got down and brought two plastic cans and filled one them with 5 litres of petrol...he then put Neeraj’s belongings and his chopped body parts into the two bags.”

Following this, “Emile took the bags to a place that was around 15 metre away from where we parked the car (on the Express Highway). He then poured the petrol on the bags and set them on fire.”

“At 10.30 pm, Nishant, a friend of Neeraj called me on my cell phone... Neeraj and Deepak (another friend who accompanied Nishant) asked me to join them to lodge a missing complaint (with the police). I went along with them to the Malad police station...I don’t know what complaint was lodged with the police. My statement was also recorded at the Malad police station. I made a false statement at the police station as told by Emile.”

“On May 8, we (Emile and Mariah) were present at the police station till 3 pm. We were again asked to be at the police station in the evening after which Emile caught a flight for Cochin. I was at the police station till next day afternoon... I had been in contact with Emile over the phone till I confessed before the police. All the while, he was threatening me not to reveal the truth to the police. He told me otherwise he would kill me and also kill himself. I told the police that Emile had killed Neeraj in front of me.”
