britexpat - "Seriously though. Is it just a publicity stunt or an example of female empowerment?"

...“Over the past 500 years girls in India have lost the right to ask questions about who they marry,” Shailja Kejriwal of NDTV Imagine, the channel that has created Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, said. “I really hope this series, which is all about a strong woman choosing her own husband, will address that. It’s about empowerment.”

- Good on her. Must be very difficult to break away from tradition. There are pros and cons to both arranged marriages and freedom to choose. It's a matter of what works for any particular individual. But I must say that an individual who is used to (eg. grown up with) a particular way of life, will see it as being restrictive, will not be able to see the bigger picture because their emotions rule. If they detach from their own situations, they will see more clearly and be able to decide what's best for them personally.

"For her part, 30-year-old Ms Sawant has said that she is looking for a husband who combines the best attributes of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan — three hugely wealthy Bollywood superstars."

- If it's just wealth, then that'll be kinda shallow .. but who's to say? Normally, the ones who are wealthy through their own (ethical) efforts have substance to their character. Whatever floats her boat.
