In the modern age of teaching method; there is no place for such punishments;

Infact each individual child should be treated differently depending on their skills, adaptability and competency levels.

I faced similar situation at my early stage of schooling But Alhamdullilah, my kids are far away from such attrocities and idiotic ways of preaching.
