Brit actually thats what happened to me when i moved to the middleast a few years ago. I had to refrain for giving the short form of my name to Arabic collegues as the meaning was rude.
So my English friends and Colleagues use the short form of my name as before which I had since Nursery days in the Uk. and my arabic friends and colleagues use my surname..
So yes one has to take into account the culture and the way people feel about names..
