Before most of the major chain hotels that served alcohol (and I am going back at least 10 years here possibly more)there was the European club which is now known as Garveys the Garvey family from what knowledge I have gained from people who have lived here for some time only took it over 5 years ago to keep the premises licensed they had to retain the European family club name in title otherwise they wouldn't have been allowed to keep the liquor license or apply for a new one which they would have never been granted.
The European Club was one of the only places in Doha to serve Alcohol this included hotels.
Since the take over 5 years ago and infact one could even go as far as saying they never really wanted it to be taken over and the establishment of Major Hotels with Liquor Licenses it has been rumored that the cops have been itching to shut it down.
there is also some feeling that the same is true for the Rugby Club....
