Most of the under educated Muslims take this verse to their advantage whereas Islam doesnt ask a man to beat his wife with belts or hunters not even a slap BUT if a woman is into something very odd & to make her understand her mistake Islam asks to have a verbal discussion first if the offence is repeated again n again & is against the norms of Islam then it is permitted. The grave issues include having out of wedlock affairs / physical relations etc. The beatings do NOT include heavy physical harm but like a light slap on arm (just an example) which means that the lady is supposed to feel shame on her act & she does not repeat this again.

Why didn't you quote the whole verse? It says that the man can beat his wife if she doesn't obey?
