As said previously I have misgivings about the underground element of things.
It depends on what kind of subterranean rock it is here. Look at London, you will notice very few lines are south of the river because that is softer rock than north of the river.
Not a geologist, but expressing a view as I am a nerd when it comes to undergound railways, especially the Tube... :-)
