BANGALORE, Nov. 4: India's unmanned lunar spacecraft, Chandrayaan-I, entered the last lap of its history-making journey to the moon
The fifth and final orbit raising manoeuvre was successfully carried out this morning, injecting Chandrayaan-I into the lunar transfer trajectory.
The spacecraft is now in an orbit with an apogee (farthest point) of 380,000 kms from earth, and is expected to be injected into lunar orbit later this week.
During the manoeuvre this morning at 4.56 am, Indian Space Research Organisation scientists fired the spacecraft's 440 Newton liquid engine for 145 seconds, about two and a half minutes. The operation was described by the space agency as a “crucial and important milestone” in the Chandrayaan-I mission.
“On Saturday evening, the lunar orbit insertion manoeuvres are planned to be carried out and Chandrayaan will be captured in the moon's orbit,” an ISRO official said All systems on board the spacecraft are performing normally, the official said. n SNS & PTI
