I am a smoker and I know that it is not good for one's health but it my choice to do so. I enjoy it. I like the first one in the morning with my cup of coffee and the one after a meal. YUM!
But, look at the statistics folks. There are many "evils" out there that we all wish we could eradicate but we can't...ie. Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs.....and the list goes on. But when have you ever known someone to have one to many cigarettes while they are behind the wheel of a vehicle and wipe out an entire family? When has a smoker had one to many and was fueled by nicotine and hit his or her spouse or children? I don't remember having one to many cigarettes and waking up the next morning by someone I don't remember meeting and thinking "WHAT HAVE I DONE?!" and then spending the whole day throwing up and calling into work SICK. Not to mention the next month wondering if your pregnant or better yet, what STD did you get. My judgement and rational are not just conveniently pushed aside because the haze of alcohol has clouded it.
Yet, alcohol is a much more socially accepted evil. Wonder why? Is it because of the revenue it generates? It generates a lot more revenue than smoking does. Many people make money off of alcohol and I am not just talking about the companys who make it, the distributors or the bars. I am talking about the hospitals, the doctors, the courts, the Alcohol classes you will have to take that the Court orders, the attorneys, the insurance companys, and the list just goes on and on. And then here come the excuses......Alcoholism is a disease. No it is not. It is an addiction. Plain and simple. Quit all the whining. Cancer is a disease. We do not choose it....it chooses us.
But then again, it has become the human way to excuse and to justify all of our bad behavior and habits by blaming everyone instead of looking and taking responsibility for our own actions. Well, here I am a smoker of 33 years and I do not blame the tobacco company's for my addiction. It is mine to own.
