Brit, you're right, the saving grace here is that at least they paint lane markings on the road and people generally stick to them (though obviously there are exceptions).
Compare this to somewhere like Cairo, where the roads are as wide but there are no markings which makes for absolute chaos!
I've also found Italian cities are scarier to drive around than Doha.
