A 52-year-old Gulf Arab businessman was stabbed to death in his Dubai flat by a young cleaner who planned the murder to steal from him, according to the Dubai police, UAE daily The National reported on Monday.
The victim, identified as A.A. from an undisclosed neighbouring Gulf state, was killed on Friday in a frenzied attack which police say left him with at least six stab wounds in parts of his body including the chest, shoulders and hip, the paper said.
The man, who was single, was a Dubai resident who had been living in the country for two years. He had been living in the flat in International City for the last six months, it added.
A 20-year-old Bangladeshi, identified as N.K.B, was working illegally for the victim as a house cleaner. N.K.B had met the victim just 15 days earlier, it said.
Police say the suspect committed a planned murder during his second visit to the victim’s flat in building 21 in International City.
Col Khalil Ibrahim Al-Mansouri, head of the crime unit at the criminal investigation department at Dubai Police, said that although the suspect worked legally at a grocery store near the victim's home, he took up an illegal job with the victim who asked him to work part-time.
"The suspect had planned to kill the victim whom he believed to be wealthy. He attacked him with a knife he obtained from the victim’s house and fatally stabbed him multiple times," the paper quoted Col Al-Mansouri as saying. "He then carried out an extensive search through the victim’s belongings in search for valuables but didn’t find anything."
Police say the suspect was also injured during the attack when the victim fought back in self-defence, which later helped police to catch the suspect.
"The investigation found that apart from the victim’s pool of blood found in the crime scene, there were traces of blood which belonged to someone else, which confirmed that the killer was injured during the confrontation," he said.
Dubai Police arrested the suspect 16 hours later in a flat near the crime scene, the paper said.
After the murder, the suspect cut open four suitcases then fled with a Gillette Mach 3 razor, a camera, an empty wallet and the kitchen knife used in the murder, the paper said.
According to the Dubai Police, there were 22 murders in Dubai in 2007. None were connected and all were committed using a knife, police say. Twelve of those murders were the result of alcohol-related feuds.
So far this year, 14 murders have been committed, including the high-profile murder of Lebanese singer Suzan Tamim who was murdered in her Dubai flat last month after a hired hitman slit her throat, the paper added.
