Never feel obliged to tip. Only do it if you feel someone deserves it.

You may feel they deserve it cos they're not getting paid enough for what they do, or because their level of service exceeded your expectations.

And in restaurants it's normal that the 'service charge' added to your bill doesn't actually go to the employees. Always worth asking the waiter, so you can leave a cash tip as well.
