I decided to have cats a few years ago because I was living in a flat. I first got one cat and then decided to get another one so they could keep each other busy. I can assure you cats are fine staying alone in a flat during the day (as long as there's water and food). Regarding dogs, I'm not sure as I've never had them in a flat.
