I've just spoken to someone about this and apparently anything over 48 hours has to be counted as overtime and those extra hours should be paid accordingly. I believe there is also a condition about the number of days off you should have per hours worked.
So if the above is correct, it is fine for a company to work you more than 48 hours, as long as you're being paid overtime accordingly and given sufficient holiday.
