I don't see any reference that I personally think that a person "should" be killed for leaving islam (without sound knowledge).

I said that his was a fact that a muslim who leaves for christianity may be put to death. And I said this to point out the extent of hardship that was upon me by openly telling my husband the feelings and doubts I was having.

Particularly the fact that he may deem me an unfit mother at the very least and fight for custody of my children. (as custody only belongs to a muslim mother.. not non-muslim)

Thank fully he was knowledgable enough to realize that I needed his support at this time rather than persecution. And understood that I had not apostated but just become rather confused about the religion.
