I went there once and left feeling ashamed of being human. This is the fastest growing economy in the world. There are billions of dollars being earned by Qatar from their Oil and Gas exports, and their fiscal budget is constantly in surplus. Why not build a brand new zoo; one where the animals roam freely and the humans have to walk through chain-link tunnels in order to see them. Start a petting zoo so the Qatari children can learn to respect animals instead of abusing them. The only place in the world where I have seen worse was in Baku, where their "zoo" had a tiny cage no bigger than something you would transport a large dog in, and inside was a young bear that could hardly move. I was so enraged that my wife had to drag me out of there as I demanded to see whoever was in charge. Good job, really, as there was nothing I could do except get myself in trouble.
There was a girl on QL last week (aimee) who was asking people to be interviewed for a research study. I went along, and the zoo was one of the things we emntioned. This study was sanctioned by the Emir, who I believe is truly trying to change the face of Qatar (in some cases, quite successfully).
If it's not too late, I would recommend getting in touch with aimee and expressing your views to her and her colleague. At least it's a start.
