hmm... two things strike me here: 1. "Cheap hotel" and 2. "couples"??? How are you a couple anywhere in the country, and why the other part of the couple only deserves a cheap hotel??

in any case, we have had to stay in a few hotels here at times, and nobody ever asked us to procure a marriage certificate, nor did we make any monetary compensation for lack of it.
