1.) who said their were different versions? Who documented this in history and what were these persons credibility to make such a claim?
2.) It has been proven (by western scholars) that the other copies mainly lacked vowels. (So that is not a big difference)
3.). That the people of this time started to change the pronunciation of the Quran. Which in Arabic changed the whole word and gives different meanings and root meanings. Which is essential to understanding the Quran. The people who did so were new muslims who were well known to err and have other agendas.
4.) it is a well documented fact that many people have tried to innovate in the religion and in all religions according to Islam. Hence the need to stop all biddah (whether good and bad) and stick to the Quran and sunnah with our molar teeth. Which is why biddahs such as the Prophet PBUH bday is not allowed even if it is with the best intentions. Alot of muslims may have had the best intentions when making a word different by changing the pronunciation and without realizing it could have caused alot of problems in the religion. Even though in that time the pronunciation may have been understood in a context by others.
Having said that.. alot of people could have purposely mispronounced the words for their own endeavors and lead the people astray!
So Uthman who was supported by the Sahaba brought the Quran together in such a short time after the Prophets PBUH death in order to stop such innovations and keep the religion as it came. In the words it came with! So that no confusion could be done by the people. And this is widely accepted by both shias and sunnis!
This is a perfect example of the reason many muslims do not always agree with the christian bible. Because the words, and therefore some believe the context, have been changed through translation.
