Quitting is easier said than done for most smokers. I am like you until last year. Used to finish 20 sticks a day.Started this habit since 1987 until 2010.
I tried sometimes to quit but usually they are either due to my girlfriend nagging or jus trying. Usually even with success on stopping for a week, I resume again, sometimes 3 months and picked up the habit.
You will have to decide and discipline yourself. Even a puff....
From what I can remember, I used a combination of sub-concious method:-
1) I do not stick with one brand of cigarette switch around also between heavy and light ones but toward light ones more. And I by when I finish...never maintain a backup pack or reach from friends. (this has impact; I noticed almost immediately I hate the different brands and sometime even dislike the brand this is good cos you are still holding the cigarette but smoke less as you "hate"d the taste)
2) Started some simple exercise like jogging or any sports (good preparation to clear your body with the nicotine). Make it a habit even if you are still smoking now.
3) Break the normal habit especially after food, during a tea or coffee, replace with fruits or chewing gum or just drink water.
4) 3 months after step 1) to 3) Start to take a small sip of the cigarette followed with a long and slow breath (feels like nothing initially but discipline yourself. do not stop your exercising.
5) Reduce the intake to one packet for few days or a week. Keep this target...when you have achieve this...you can decide anytime...when you want to light up another...think of the effort you have put in; start calculating the cigarette you had spend your money on and target something to buy to reward yourself....QR6x365 day is about QR1900 !!
I think the rest would be easier... I do not know if this will work for you...but I am absolutely smoke free, I still do jogging and plays the table tennis without the need to catch my breath as much and I rewarded myself an extra trip back home!
You and anyone else can do the same...No luck needed but good effort and determination. Proof others that you can have self-control, good discipline control and strong will power! You will benefit repect with the achievement, sense of achievement, regain your stamina, less sugar needed in your tea or coffee, you will have less body odour, no need to worry about smiling with a stained tooth with a smell!
