But what is war? and when are people at war? is it only right if a nation state formally declares war on another nation state (in writing) and they agree to go to war?

I personally think that though the Geneva convention's intentions were honorable, they are nothing more than an attempt to disguise the uglyness that is war. It is not a civilized "sport" to engage in when nations are at a dispute....any attempt to codify it is risking trivializing the atrocity that is war. If you kill your neighbour to steal his home, then its a crime....but if you are in the army and your country declares war on your neighbour to annex territory, then its ok to murder because "you are at war"?

I'm sorry, but that just strikes me as incredibly callous and evil...not to mention seriously warped....its not right under ANY circumstances to take another human beings life...and that is my frevrent belief...but I COULD see myself doing it under ONE circumstance only....and that is if the life of my wife or child were threatened and it was the ONLY way to save them.....even then I probably would be haunted by the fell deed for the rest of my life.

Again please understand that I am not trying to justify what others do (for MANY reasons), but i'm saying I can understand why they do it....now as others pointed out, if the root causes can be eliminated, then maybe our children can grow up in a world with less bloodshed!

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?
