I guess the whole point is that we justify some wars and acts of violence, in the guise of being for the greater good, whilst we condemn others as nothing more than murder.  While the whole world was singing free Nelson Mandela had we chosen to overlook or to justify the violence and loss of life perpertrated by the ANC?  I am sure that acts considered heroic during any of the 'justified' (I use this term loosely) WWI & WWII may have been little more than suicide missions.  The British government now has dialogue with the IRA.  I know its not a new phenomenom, the ability it has to cause death and damage is greater though.  We've found such abhorrent uses for marbles, nails and explosives.

I am so very lucky that I haven't had to choose between humanity or an individual human life, I haven't had to tolerate a regime so abhorrent that others have resorted to acts of bloody violence.  Its not quite the same thing though is it?  These people have access to legal protests, to world wide media, to state their case in a non violent way and to have every hope that they will be heard.  This violence isn't an act of the last resort, its a choice over ways I would consider to be more effective, more rational, more moral.
