Don't know much about Qatar, but in Saudi, the Jeep Cherokee is a pretty good performer off road, fairly solid. It is I think, a V8 4.0L engine, and generally, the American engines tend to be pretty solid. However, the rest of the car can deteriorate fairly rapidly if not looked after, and as also ready suggested, they are cheap to buy but spare parts will be a little more costly than other makes. A friend of mine has Cherokee and he really thinks it's a great desert 4x4.

The Grand Cherokee is I think more suited to the roads and the tarmac.

Depends on what you will be using it for - if it is mainly on road, then I would suggest going for something like Ford Explorer or Chevrolet Blazer. I had a Chevy Blazer 1999 Model, and it was pretty decent, wish I hadn't sold it. If you are doing a lot of off roading, then the Cherokee is pretty rugged to get you through.
