I have been reading quite a bit about this since lordreturns started this thread and you too would be surprised to find some amazing facts about this wonderful religion which we westerns conviniently ignore most of the times . Worshiping multiple deities is an ancient concept which was followed by the Sumerian,the greeks,spartans, egyptians and the Indus valley civilization of harrappa and mohenjadaro. It's not correct to say that it's 'The antithesis' of Islam.It would be appropriate to say that Monotheism is 'The antithesis' of all the ancient religions as Islam and christanity are relatively new religions as compared to all the polytheistic religions including hinduism. And you would be surprised to find that hinduism is the religion from which other major religions have emerged,namely,buddhism ( awesome),jainism,sikhism. Many scholars in the west believe and it has been proved that sanskrit which is the language of the hindus and has been used in vedas is one of the most ancient and scientific languages of the world and is the mother of a lot of other languages. Arabic has a lot of words which have roots in Sanskrit. Vedas are the best written books with very scientific facts on many aspects such as medicine,science and technology. I even found that the vedas have the exact description of the flying machines and the concept of jet propulsion.
If you go out with an open mind and try and find out the facts you will see light. I'am impressed. This religion definately deserves more attention.
