Now now all you spinster gals...soooo outspoken...just get back up on your shelf and be quiet and smile (which may I say is gettng a little dusty as time goes by) until someone comes along whereby you will gratefully accept his offer...
Lol, sorry, couldn't resist!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Forgive my impertinence.
Agree there is something very old-fashioned about the word 'spinster'. But then, Qatar isn't totally politically correct yet ;)
This is a problem of change and progress in the country. Most marriages are arranged. Parents get together and come up with a list of ' requirements' for their son/daughter, in consultation with them of course. Many men do not wish their wives to work and increasing numbers of women are either working or intend to so they will not agree to marry a man who will not support this.
Much better to stay single if one cannot find a compatible partner. I know of several marriages breaking down shortly after marriage because the women felt pressure from her family to marry so agreed and was miserable.
I guess in this still traditional society it is almost a must for many families for their daughters (and sons) to be married and have children.
I hope that more and more women can choose their own path and the social stigma of electing not to get married diminishes. perhaps we are looking at a few generation down the line at least.
On a personal note, my parents did not wish me to have an arranged marriage so I chose my partner. They are enlightened people. Thanks Mum and Dad!
