Monthly expenditures are going to vary a lot depending on if he will live in campus housing, so the housing is usually a part of the tuition, or in an apartment off campus, which could easily cost USD1000 per month or more in San Jose. Transportation is also a big consideration. If he lives on campus, he will have a better opportunity to meet other friends in his similar situation and they can plan things together so he may not need a car right away. San Jose does have a sort of public transportation system for commuters, but it's not fabulous. Will he eat out all the time or cook at home? Again, the school will be able to give you a sort of sample budget for incoming students.
