The first thing you need to realize is a Honda CRV is NOT a 4x4. It is what is called a "crossover" SUV and is not really an off-road vehicle. It has AWD [All Wheel Drive] and is certainly better than a 2 wheel drive vehicle.
That being said, it can certainly be used safely off-road in the hands of a person that knows what they are doing. General off-raod driving can be done with due caution. Driving on the sand dunes is an entirely different matter. Sand requires certain principles to be adhered to - those basically are POWER and TRACTION. A Honda CRV has a 4-cylinder engine with [very] limited power and torque. It also has relatively narrow tyres that are not great in sand.
My advice would be to take your CRV to the dunes and "test" your car and your skills where it is safe to do so but make sure that you are not alone - have somebody with a proper 4x4 go with you. NEVER venture out into the desert without taking all the necessary precautions to safeguard yourself should something go wrong.
Feel free to PM me should you require further information and assistance.
