you earn points by contributing, basically writing messages, answering to others.
the point count show to others how involved you are and if you are a real identity (not a come and go once userid).
This has the advantage of opening some doors to you, if you are willing to go through any. like 25 points is the minimum you need I happened to learn to be a member of the book club.
otherwise I have not read (could have missed though) anything about getting a prize with your points. I wouldn't suggest it. Its the quality I want more than the quantity.
