We stayed as guests in a home right in the middle of a small game park near the Kruger (Sep06)... the lions used to roam thru the front yard every evening - scary! but exciting! The owners had big powerful spot lights that we'd use to view them 50-100 yards further out.. they were usually hunting for bok or bush pig (non-halal:) on the farm.

Then when we went back in Dec06, we had more great viewing of Lion in the main game park, but such a lot of elephant it became [yawn] boring, although I loved watching them play in the mud pools! :) The best was sitting at the Olifants River game-spotting resort, having breakfast (real bacon) prepared by the locals who ran the place... hippo there in abundance floating near the banks of the river - the most dangerous animal you can find.. Saw a few crocs too.

If you can find a really good game ranger who knows his stuff.. you can have the best viewing ever. We came across a terrible smell the one day and the ranger told us that a leopard (usually roam as loners) must be in the area, as we coudln't find the kill, so it had probably been dragged up into a tree by the leopard.

I love the African bush! Fun! The best time for viewing game is in the sring-winter-autumn months between April and August. In summer, like now, is rainy season, & the vegetation too dense to be able to see very much.
