Dear Solo,
Welcome to Qatar...
The best thing to do is. Ask your employer to provide you with a visit visa first...Then you come over here and stay in any decent hotel for a month or so..You will be able to see the city and locate yourself in a decent localaty accrding to your preference and convenience..The hotel rents are not too much...And according to my experience you may not need to use an agency help to locate an accomodation...I think the agency will charge you normally an amount equivalent to your 1st month's rent...and if you are willing to bargain then you don't need to deposit 12 months rent.(nothing is typical in Qatar... you need to bargain for the best)..normally you may need to deposit only 1 months rent as a cautionary deposit which you can claim from the landlord on your plans to move out by giving one month advance notice...and since you are from US all the procedures would be smoother for you...
