that all religions have to be by their very nature irrational then?
In the OP it says "prove it" It's up to religions to prove god, I'm just giving them the opportunity - so far no one has.
The typical 'religious' devotee believes in something they cant prove and then cries off for protection quoting 'sacred' texts which again offer no proof.
This debate goes way over the head of most religious followers, but those like PM, DG and army001 at least investigate what they believe and for that they have my respect. I still think they are wrong.
One of my friends was struggling to become a Muslim, after having been brought up a Roman Catholic, and we often read and debated what was in the Quran. When his father died he could not square what it said about life after death in both religions and he came to the conclusion there was no such thing as god if these were supposed to be his revelations. He began to use the brain that has been developed over eons. At least he used it, whatever conclusion he came to(god/no god/which religion)was a choice and not blind faith without evidence. The indoctrination (here's the controversial bit) of children is a form of child abuse IMHO , and it impairs critical thinking for life when it comes to religion. It's very difficult to entirely break free from it, some people disown all religions but remain deists i.e. that there is a creator of the universe but it has had no interaction with humans, does not intervene in the world and in fact does not care. But most find it difficult to break away from the idea of of a creator.
Reading your post again you may well be agreeing with me, cant really tell. :-)
