As _Rob said; at the Mall (on D Ring Road). Up the escalator, on the first floor. Horribly horribly expensive, even if some of the stuff is actually quite nice.
Some of the furniture in Home Centre (City Centre or Jarir Flyover) is reasonably 'boring modern.
You could also take a drive up Salwa Road where there are many furniture shops. Some old some new some cheap some expensive. No particular recommendations - happy window shopping!
If you're looking for cheap furniture (and don't mind it looking that way either!) then the shops in the Najma area are the place to go. But the styling isn't Ikea.
If you have a 'middle' budget then The One (right hand shop in Hyatt Plaza) could suit your taste.
