My imam told me that the veil is NOT majboor (Forced), it's mista7ib (preferred).
There are many reasons why women where it these days.
1) Religion
2) To hide the body (if they are not confident)
3) Fashion (just as it was the fashion in America in the 1950's
4) In some cases they are forced to by family or peer pressure. (which I don't like personally)
5) Tradition. As much as the veil can be connected to religion, it's also traditional. You don't ask a Japanese person why they wear a Kimono do you? It's the same.
The veil and abaya can be quite cooling as well. They are made from super light fabrics which allow the air to circulate and cool you.
