You would not be the only Aussie here, their is a few of us sunnying ourselves on the the shores of Doha. Generally enjoying ourselves but this is not Australia. We feel very safe here with no safety concerns expect for the driving but been a Victorian your driving style should fit in OK
The Aust / New Zealand 'group' do meet on a regular basis with various activities from a regular monthly pub night, formal ball, golf days, anzac dawn services, to a christmas bash for the kids.
We do not get Aust TV but do receive a couple of AFL games a week.
Schools and housing are the biggest concerns with places in a good school hard to find. Try Newton International as they do have Australian teachers and last time I heard had spots available.
The summer heat is barely tolerable however you go from your a/c house, to the a/c car to the a/c shops. It's the couple of steps in between that is hot. The humdity is the killer.
If you are looking to transplant yourself into an Australian lifestyle this is not the place for you but if you are willing to adjust and make do, then look at the experience. I relate Doha to a small country town their is alway something to do but only one of everything. If you are looking for the city life go to Dubai.
