I think benic was only trying to describe what her husband's appearance might look like to people who don't know what a maori person looks like.
Would she be married to him if she was ashamed of him?
And while mixed-race relationships are perfectly normal, some people do frown on them. In my experience, it's been non-white people who object to a mixed-race relationship, and some of the comments can be quite nasty, so I can understand why benic wants to ask the question.
