I know my nephews in another GCC country have felt the same way. However, (partly because of their IB requirements) they found that volunteering could be fulfilling both scholastically and personally. One volunteered with a local animal shelter (cleaning cages, walking dogs, playing with cats, etc), another did work with environmental efforts. So there are options, sometimes you have to look for them, sometimes you have to come up with them yourself.
Think about what's going on around you every day - what can you do to make your world, circle of acquaintances or a complete stranger's experience a little bit better (doesn't have to be a lot to make a big difference).

Good luck.
