Have you tried to reset the Ipod? it is fairly simple, hold the menu and center select buttons for about 10 seconds and it should reset, it will not do this if the battery is completly dead. Also try to charge it via nother computer or a car charger as the battery may be you issue. If this fails to fix it the Hard drive in the unit is just that...a hard drive that can be slaved and read by your comuter once removed from the Ipod. You have not lost all hope.
