besides this one should always keep in mind that the basic definition of a muslim (no matter sunni or shia) is the first Kalima of belief that "There is no one to be worshiped except Allah and Mohammad (Peace & Blessings be Upon Him) is Allah's Prophet.
If some muslim denies Allah's words (Quran) or disagrees to the sayings of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), he indirectly denies the original belief so he/she can't be a muslim. But differences in Shia and Sunni are very vage and extremely hard to reach to the roots to identify that someone is denying Allah or His prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
