Her age shouldn't be a problem for either the familiy visit visa or a tourist visa extended.
There is two ways you can approach this, you can either get a family visit visa, which will require your company to sign on to it, this is vaild for a month and can be extended upto I think 3 months.
The easier way is to get her a pre arranged tourist visa as S.Africa is not one of the 33 listed countries where you can get one on entry assuming your Mother in law is s.African as well. You can then after two weeks get it extended at the airport immigration, then you can get another extension for a further month, that is the limit for extensions though, as with everything it costs.
You need your passport your wifes passport, work visa and marriage license, you must have valid residency, there is a form to fill in, just to be on the safe side take your work contract as well. Once they have accepted the application, you will get a serial number, you use that on the qatar e gov website http://www.e.gov.qa/eGovPortal/index.jsp and print out the Visa, it will also be logged in the database, so the mother in aw just arrives and the visit visa will be at passport control on the screen, but it is worth e mailing her acopy to bring with her
The immigration centre is a white building on your right if you come from the airport and travel to the corniche, travelling on the road we had to use before they reopened the airport road.
As with anything in Qatar, that is what I did last time, nothing to say it hasn't changed!!!
