A lot of people here are really negative about life and living in Qatar, but I think it just depends on what attitude you take and how you look at it. In terms of salary, 14000 is good if u;re in a mid-level career for instance.
On a salary like that and with rents going up ridiculously high, it may well be beneficial for you and family if your wife works as well (an average UNFURNISHED flat goes for at least 5000 riyals) - and private schools if that's what you want to choose for your child are very expensive indeed unless RasGas will pay for you (some companies do that, but it's best to ask)....
It just depends on what u're aiming to achieve by living in Qatar - on the one hand, it's a great place for families with young children as it's a very safe place and you can be sure that children can go out and won't get molested by strangers. On the other hand, employment and labour laws here aren't kind even if u're western.
