NEW DELHI (AP) — Popular Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has been detained at an Indian airport carrying $124,000, a much larger amount than is permissible under Indian law.
The Press Trust of India News agency says Rahat and his 18-member troupe were detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport Sunday before they could fly to the United Arab Emirates.
A Pakistani diplomat confirmed Khan's detention Monday and said Pakistani High Commission officials have taken up the matter with Indian authorities. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
Khan is quite popular in India, holding concerts in the country and singing in Bollywood movies.
