Why do we prespire so much in humid weather?

edifis
By edifis

This is puzzling me a lot.
During the hot humid weather there is lots of moisture in the air surrounding us. The air is almost saturated with moisture. Despite this we loose lots of body fluid through our skin in the form of prespiration.
This saps a lot of energy and we often get cramps due to dehydration while playing and we get tired very soon while running!

Conversely, during the Hot & dry months when the air is very dry and there is not much moisture in the air, we don't loose so much body fluids through our skin! Therefore we don't get so much dehydrated. But as per layman's logic the dry air should have sucked more fluids from our body and make us more tired!
Can someone explain me the scientific reason why this is so?

RICE is used usually in Ankle sprain etc but doesn't help much in Tennis Elbow:-)

Thanks for inviting guys, I am not much of a sports person. I am better as a sport watcher than player.

Good Morning Everyone ....

We can play tennis on WII sports, less stress, and inside with air conditioning. US sports medicine specialists seem to like RICE when it comes to tendinitis;

R- Rest

I- Ice ( hard to find in Doha) ;)

rishi, you may need one or two shots of corticosteriod injections on the tendon site. This along with proper physiotherapy and rest for sometime heals all the minor cases.

Surgery is an option only in chronic cases if this doesn't help.

It has two handles so you can hit with two hands off both sides comfortably.

edifis,

i want to add one more thing...

we tend to drink more water during hot dry days as our throat becomes dry as well, thus we generally dont get de-hydrated.

on the other hand, if the atmosphere is moist, the feeling of thirst is less but the body sweats out at the same rate. since we dont drink that much water, our body becomes dehydrated before we realise.

we should watch our piss...take water if it starts getting coloured.

edifis,

our body is made to sweat in warm environments so that we lose the latent heat of evaporation from our skin and thus cool ourselves...thats the nature's gift to us.

now, when the relative humidity is nearing the due-point, the rate of evaporation decreases as the atmosphere cannot take in more water vapour in itself. thus, the sweat remains on the skin and we feel the moisture on our body.

we feel enervated not because of the sweat but due to the lack of oxygen in our breath. this is due to high partial pressure of water vapour in the air which results in low partial pressure of oxygen in the inhaled air.

once we go to an AC environment, we become fine again..:)

Sweating is the same, in dry air sweat evaporates quickly. In highly humid conditions, air is already saturated with water content so can't take any more from your body.

By edifis• 3 Aug 2010 22:03
edifis

But why then do we get more dehydrated during high humidity? It should have been the other way around!

By drmana• 3 Aug 2010 22:01
drmana

Under conditions of high humidity, the evaporation of sweat from the skin decreases(as the air is already saturated with moisture) and thus the we feel sticky.

But in dry conditions, though we sweat as much as in humid condition the sweat evaporates quickly. Hence we don't feel sticky.

errr.......did I clarify your doubt convincingly? :-)
