First Time Visitor-MotoGP 2010

Hello everyone,
My bf and I are coming over from california to watch motoGP in a couple of weeks. I've tried to do as much research as i can before asking this question....

Is it better to
1. rent a car and drive from the hotel to Losail Racetrack.

2. hire a taxi (but not sure how to get back to the hotel from the racetrack when we're ready to go home)

3. take the Bus (is there a bus schedule, especially since its going to be a night race)

4. is there another way to get there and back?

we'll be staying at the Dubai Creek Hilton, and from what i've read, driving on our own through the city might be a little difficult, and we don't want to be involved in any accidents.

I'm really excited, i hope i posted this in the right place.

Oh, one last question, do they allow women to ride and race motorcycles?? it's kind of a dumb question since i know women are allowed to drive, but just thought i'd ask.

Thank you :)

1. rent a car and drive from the hotel to Losail Racetrack. Yes because the track is outside of town and getting a taxi back would be close to impossible.

2. hire a taxi (but not sure how to get back to the hotel from the racetrack when we're ready to go home). O would rent a car.

3. take the Bus (is there a bus schedule, especially since its going to be a night race). There is no such thing

4. is there another way to get there and back?

we'll be staying at the Dubai Creek Hilton, and from what i've read, driving on our own through the city might be a little difficult, and we don't want to be involved in any accidents. Dubai Creek Hilton is in Dubai and not in Doha. If you are planning to stay in Dubai you will need to fly into Qatar. Alternatively you could stay in a hotel in Qatar

I'm really excited, i hope i posted this in the right place.

Oh, one last question, do they allow women to ride and race motorcycles?? it's kind of a dumb question since i know women are allowed to drive, but just thought i'd ask. If you have a license you can drive anything regardless if you are a man or a woman.

Thank you

marycatherine,

racism and discrimination is alive and well in America as well, but i think with each generation it gets a little better.

The American passports wouldn't have done much good if one of you is not white/European. You would probably have been asked for a marriage certificate.

Racist and discriminatory - welcome to the Gulf.

afm25,

Considering the lack of individual freedom here, I think you took a wise decision.

As for the dressing code here, here is more about how much skin you (dare to) expose. What is considered to be a decent t-shirt and shorts in the west might not be ok here.

And yes, there are great risks to get into trouble simply because one is not married and has a partner.

These restrictions are something always kept secret by the local promoters which puts visitors at risk of getting caught (recent sad example in Dubai: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/14/kiss-dubai-britons-public)

thanks for the heads up nic. I know in general that showing up well-groomed and looking like money will usually get you further than if you show up in jeans and flip flops and looking like irresponsible teens. I'm not sure how far an American passport will get us, especially since i'm asian-american (3rd/4th generation) and my bf is white. I mean, we're both americans, but people are obviously going to judge us by the way we look.

We have decided not to travel to Qatar/Doha in the chance that they refuse to give us a hotel room. Its a very long way to travel only to be told that we can't stay.

In any case, we always have MotoGP @ Laguna Seca, which is only an hour and a half from my house lol.

Thanks again everyone :)

afm25,

Some information you probably don't know and need to be aware before coming here:

The local law forbids non-married couples to share the same hotel room.

Public display of affection is also NOT tolerated (including holding hands or kissing).

Your dressing code needs to be modest (Muslim standards).

I know these are all turn-off’s but you need to be aware before venturing to this region.

You guys will miss the best race of the season...Come and enjoy! Never will Spies be a rookie again, and they are all fast on this track. Its quite spectacular when you see them practise and the sparks fly off the bikes as they lean so low, and with elbows, I think it will be even better! Look at their qualifying times..Rossi, Spies, Lorenzo and Stoner are all within one second of each other! Its going to be the race of the season!

Watch the race at night and go Dune bashing during the day.

holy cow, how terribly embarassing. thanks for all your very helpful info. i don't know how but i got the doha and dubai airports mixed up, and then everything went downhill from there. perhaps we will just stay home and watch it from the tv, altho i was pretty excited to watch rossi and spies go at it in person. we haven't made any reservations yet, my bf works for the airlines so we get discounted tickets and have to go stand-by. maybe we'll do this next year.

thank you again everyone for your help. :)

ps - marais, awesome bike pic!

Hiring a car is fine - private driver also fine.

Driving is a little mad here at times but its fairly direct to get to Losail(lots of roundabouts).

If you are interested in a private driver I can give you ph numbers for a couple of drivers I use quite regularly - very relialbe, just need to call 30mins - an hour prior to pickup.

Enjoy Doha - it should be a good weekend (if you make it via Dubai)

you can buy tickets directly from Losail. I also saw they have a setup in Villagio, or you can buy at the gates (normal tickets) VIP tickets must be pre-booked from Losail

from where can we buy the tickets?

Losail is 28km from Doha. You drive about 5km in city traffic and the rest is on a straight highway. Enough signages around to show you how to get there.

Best is to rent a car, and drive there. Driving here is not that difficult, just heavy traffic sometimes.

Your Hotel is in Dubai, which is 8 hours drive and 1hours flight from Doha Qatar. You can search for Intercontinental, Sheraton, W, hotels which is close to shopping malls for day trips.

You have a choice of tickets. The general entrance ticket at $30 for 3 days entrance. You will be seated on the main straight Grandstand, which also has a big screen to view the rest of the track. the 2nd option is $650 and you will sit on turn 6/7 in the VIP tent where you can see most of the back corners, you also get a tour around the track plus pitlane walk.

If you are interested in doing a trackday here. you need your own bike, and it cost around $200 for the day. PM me if you want the trackday schedule. The next one is 3 April at night. If you have a motorcycle lisence you can rent a Harley as well for riding around town. Woman are allowed to ride, as long as you are lisenced.

First of all check which city your hotel is located in. If in Dubai, you're out of luck. In Doha, you should be able to make arrangements with a private car/driver to drop you off and pick you up. If necessary, I have thename and number of a reliable network PM me.

If you don't know where you're going and you're not used to the driving "standard" (and I use the term loosely) in Qatar, your best bet is to get a driver/car.

If you are worried about driving around town, I would suggest you rent a car to go to the Motogp event only. The traffic at night is not bad and the way to the track is very easy to figure out.Personally, I think that's the cheapest and best way.

Since you're coming all the way from US (west coast) I must warn you that it might not really be worth it.

Few points to be considered,

1. There is only a single seating stand in the whole track which is along the straight and on top of the PIT lane (VIP seating).

2. You cannot walk/ride/drive around to other parts of the track (corners) unlike in other countries, which means you will be restricted to watch the race when the bikes zoom past along the straight and the rest you'll end up watching on the big screen.

3. Renting a cab is not an option since you wont find a single cab for your return journey unless you pay for the waiting charges (3-4 hrs and three days).

4. Hiring a car and driving down is a good option, since there is a direct highway bi passing the city traffic to Losail track.

5. There are no buses to Losail to my knowledge, unless they have something on package deals and if you are on a package deal they should take care of you travel to and fro.

6. If you have VIP tickets you will get to walk along the PIT lane once and maybe grad a few pics/autographs if you are lucky.

7. Dubai creek hotel is in Dubai which is in another country, you need to find a hotel in Doha.

8. If you are thinking about riding/driving around the track, there are separate track days for it. Please check Losail circuit website for more info. They will not let you ride/drive around the track during the three days of MotoGP.

Hope these help.

Hilton Hotel in Doha is not yet on service!!

Are you actually staying in Qatar or in Dubai!!

If it's Hilton Creek Dubai it seems like you are not staying in Qatar at all....and that might be a BIG issue.

Regards!!

Do we have Dubai Creek Hilton hotel in Doha?

Fox Limo could be an option. You can find them on the internet.
