Tucky are you still in Qatar? I've just arrived from New Zealand (January 2011) where i am quite a competitive recreational cyclist, having been in many road race over the years. Now even after one day here i notice the traffic here can be a little crazy. I want to keep up with cycling, are there any groups that ride regularly, or is there a velodrome available?
I believe that cycling does continue, although a lot of people will be out of the counrty July-September I guess.
Hard shoulder = the side part of the road which people don't drive on.
Traffic is not too bad early on a Friday morning. Still get a few idiots around, but not too many. Safe enough on the hard shoulder. Not seen any accidents so far.
By the way I visted Skate shack. True that they got some nice bits but yeah expensive too. Nonetheless their presence is really a boost. Planning to go vacation in July and then start riding here.
There were 15-20 of us went out this morning, starting on Doha Corniche, up the main road to Simaisma, round the back to Al Khor, then down the main road back to Doha to finish back on the Corniche. 102 kilometres, the majority of it on hard shoulders.
5.15 meet on Friday mornings, and various evening training sessions at Lusail.
I am interested but still worried about road safety here. Especially since cyclists are an unexpected bunch here in Qatar - to a lot of drivers. But organised rides hmm sounds good. Any info
Thanks for replying. Its not for Qatar. I am going to SL and its very difficult to find quality stuff back there. Who wants cheap ropes from China etc ...?
Well there's a place for cycling, just found, its called Skate Shack near thursday friday market, salwa road

Do you ride during peak of the summer - July to Sept? I too like to join the fun but not sure of few things:
How is the road traffic on your path?
Any major accidents invloving road cyclists that you witnessed. and finally
Whats that thing about hard shoulders? I thought shaky legs were the usual thing!
Would be really glad if you could give some info on these
Happy riding
Mahesh

Skate Shack stocks a reasonable amount of road cycling gear. Not cheap, but they've got a few nice bits.
And there are quite a few organised rides too, if you're interested in that.

There is no climbing scope in Qatar....other than the corporate ladder.....
So I wonder if you will find any rope and carabineer in Qatar.
You might find these stuff a plenty in Nepal and also back home.
There might be cycling stuff available....but dont know about the race-quality ones. There are frequent cyclers on the Al Khor road.
Hey anyone know a place to buy cycling gear for Road racing in Qatar? Well I am looking to buy a frame and few other stuff.
