Bike Dilema - Desperate help needed!
I'm due to move out to Qatar on the 25th August. Was just packing my bike up ready to send it out, and I noticed there is a big crack in the frame on the down tube, making it far too dangerous to ride.
What do I do?!
Do I buy a new one and get it shipped straight out?
Do I wait till I get to Qatar and see how much cycling I'm likely to do?
Do I buy a bike out in Qatar?
Can I order one on the internet and get one delivered to Qatar?
Help! I've been doing a fair bit of cycling recently (about 100 miles a week +) and don't want to have to stop!
I suggest you check out Doha before you get a new bike. I myself like to ride bikes but I only had the guts to go out once in 2 months...the drivers here have no respect for riders and the streets are also very bad or under construction so the environment for riding is not so good.
I have been forced to ride exercise bikes to save my life.
i understand there is a pretty good bike shop in Doha on Salwa road, a friend of mine bought an excellent entry level road racing bike there. i do not know if the prices are good or not, i'm probably going to check that out this fall as i miss a good bike ride.
if you are used to biking to work or just hopping on for a ride in the evening, you probably will be disappointed at some level here. people do ride at the outdoor track at the aspire as i understand but riding on the roads at any time is extremely dangerous here. there is a road racing group and a mountain bike club here. lots of people do go out riding really early on friday mornings when there is very little traffic. it is also waaayyy to hot from may to october to ride outside, just like itś waaayyy to cold in many parts of the world to ride from october to april.
check out the cost of repair and find out the price of one in Doha.
weigh and decide
Bring it out and pay a few riyals to get it welded up!
If you are as hardcore an athlete as your post and profile suggest you may want to wait until you see just how much and what kind of riding you're going to be able to do over here. Road and climate conditions are not going to be at all what you are used to. However I would ask some of ppl on QL who do a lot of cycling to weigh in on whether the quality of bicycles you can buy here is up to snuff, or if he should import.
